Today we start our journey with a visit to Masada. The mountain fortress was built by the Romans and King Herod. The 960 Jewish rebels were besieged by the Romans, and according to historians, they committed suicide rather than surrender.

The fortress offers a formidable defense because of its sheer cliffs and adequate storage of water and food. After several months, the Romans built a ramp and when they entered the city they found nothing and no one.

You need to take a tram to get to the fortress. Actually very cool ride. There are beautiful mosaic floors and plastered painted walls. These were very skilled and artistic builders. The views of the Dead Sea and surrounding desert are beautiful. The square formations you see at the base of the mountain are Roman forts.
